PerkinElmer to buy Germany’s Euroimmun for $1.3bn

US-based PerkinElmer has agreed to acquire German firm Euroimmun Medical Laboratory Diagnostics for around $1.3bn.

Based in Lübeck, Euroimmun offers test systems and automation solutions for medical laboratory diagnostics.

The company provides product solutions across immunology, cell biology, histology, biochemistry and molecular biology.

With around 2,400 employees, Euroimmun provides its products in around 130 countries in Europe, America, Asia, Australia and Africa.

The acquisition will allow PerkinElmer to expand its presence in autoimmune and allergy diagnostic markets, in addition to providing new infectious disease capabilities to customers in China.

PerkinElmer’s global diagnostics portfolio will now comprise of solutions focused on reproductive health, autoimmune, infectious disease and allergy testing and gene analyses.

It also offers genomics offerings for oncology and other molecular tests through its range of instruments, reagents, assay platforms and software offerings.

Subject to customary closing conditions, the deal is expected to complete in the fourth quarter of this year.

Euroimmun founder and CEO professor Winfried Stöcker said: "I am delighted to entrust Euroimmun to PerkinElmer, a company I believe shares our important mission and will secure the continuity of our culture and tradition of innovation that we have developed over the last thirty years.”

In January this year, PerkinElmer agreed to acquire India-based Tulip Diagnostics for an undisclosed sum.

Based in Goa, Tulip provides in-vitro diagnostic reagents, kits and instruments for diagnostic labs, government and private healthcare facilities in the country.
